This is a topic I actually think about a lot. It doesn't have anything to do with my race or gender, but just simply the family that I was born in to. Now don't get me wrong my family is by no definition "rich", however my parents do collectively make more money than the majority of my friends and people I am associated with. You would think that because of this I'd naturally have more things that my friends wanted etc. So not the case up until recently.
Infact, all throughout high school I was completely broke. I never had any money because although my parents made a decent amount they never gave me any. Just getting 20 bucks from my dad was a task. Not calling my parents cheap, but they were definitely stingy with the free money. They didn't mind paying thousands of dollars a year on club volleyball, but wouldn't give me 20 dollars to go to the movies; ultra confusing. Looking back now I realize it was all a part of their master plan to make me a good person and appreciate what I have etc. Because unlike me, my parents grew up with nothing. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not at all here to brag or gloat about what my parents can afford or how much money my family has because like I said, we're not by any means wealthy.
The main point I'm trying to lead up to in this blog is how their hard work and dedication have basically set me up for life. As I keep saying, it's not about their money but rather how they earn it. My parents and uncle are all three in the IT feild (technical business stuff). After completely failing at the idea to become a pharmacist I decided to follow in their footsteps. Because of this I have so many opportunities that other ISDS magors may not have. Networking is a major part of being a business professional. So having three family members in the same feild of work as myself is huge. Just think of how many friends you have on facebook and multiply that times 3, that would be the amount of connections I can potientially have access to because of this. All in all the point I'm trying to make is because of the hardwork my family members have put in their entire lives, they are able to set me up for success. I obviously still have to do all the work, it's no free ride, but it will just help me getting started all the more easier.
Our parents sound exactly the same, they don't necessarily have tons and tons of money, but know how to spend it without being flashy. It's annoying when people think we are just "rich girls" but in reality nothing is just handed to us. But how we were raised will definitely help both of us in the real world.
